A new model of the Golf, VW’s most successful car, has been unveiled during 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. Called simply the Golf R, it replaces the good old V6-powered R32 model. And it comes with a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine.

But this is no ordinary engine! It’s a 2.0 liters TSI which is charged to give 270 hp and 350 Nm of torque, and that makes it the most powerful Golf ever made.

With this powerplant, the Golf R becomes one of the most capable hot hatchbacks in the market today. It can do zero to hundred in 5.7 seconds, while the top speed is limited to 250 k/h. If you opt for the advanced DSG gearbox, the acceleration time drops to 5.5 seconds!

The good thing about this turbocharged engine is fuel efficiency. It is 21 percent lighter on fuel than the outgoing R32 model and uses only 8.5 liters per 100 km.

2010 Golf R comes with new visual upgrades and equipments. It has new bumpers at the front and back with LED taillights and LED daytime running lights, and integrated rear diffuser with twin central exhaust pipes.

The interior of the car is also upgraded with Grey leather upholstery and aluminium decorations. Some of the unique features in the cabin include the R gearshift knob, carpet floor mats, aluminium door tread plates with R logo and the instruments with their blue pointers. Stainless steel sport pedals and R-specific instrument and door accents in “Silver Lane” style complete the customization. Another standard feature on the Volkswagen Golf R is an automatic climate control system (“Climatronic”), “RCD 310” radio-CD system (4 x 20 Watt) including MP3 player plus dual tuners .

The car comes standard with newly designed 18-inch alloy wheels with 225/40 tyres. The same wheels are available in a 19-inch version with 235/35 tyres as an optional extra.
