2011 Scirocco R-Cup Calendar

Volkswagen efforts to create a motorsport career for the amazing Scirocco hatchback turned out to be a complete success in its inaugural season. So they’re coming back for a second on in 2011. This one-make cup only allows Sciroccos that run on bio natural gas and therefore reduces CO2 emissions by 80 per cent compared to other similar series. It also includes both male and female racers from eight different countries and, once again, motorsport legends and celebrities will complete the grid as guest entrants at each round. 2010 saw an average of 86,000 spectators flock to the jointly held races. The annual Race of Champions showdown this year will show how in tune with the time it is by bringing a gas-powered VW Scirocco as one of the cars the champions will drive. The Scirocco R-Cup race car marks the first time a vehicle powered by gas has competed in the event. It has 275 PS and its 2.0-litre four-cylinder TSI engine run on bio-CNG which reduces CO2 emissions by 80 per cent, an incredible performance compared to gasoline model. VW Scirocco Gas-Powered Rally Car

You might remember the racing version of the VW Scirocco R Cup which was powered by a bio-gas engine and acted very well at the Nurburgring 24 hour race. Now they have also made a rally version of the car with the same spec. It has made its racing debut at Rally Germany, where two examples were driven by Carlos Sainz and Nasser Al-Attiyah, both very big names in rallying. The Bio Natural Gas 2.0-liter engine of this rally VW Scirocco develops 270 hp and produces 80 percent less carbon dioxide than the equivalent gasoline powered unit.

Gas-Powered VW Scirocco takes on the Green Hell

This year at the 24 hours race of Nurburgring aka the green hell, VW shows us its eco-racer face by entering three Sciroccos powered by natural gas engines, which emit considerably less Co2. They use a 2-litre TSI turbo engine powered by bio natural gas developing 243 kW (330 hp). The previous version used to have 207 kW (282 hp). Like the new Golf R which replaced the R32 in VW’s performance range, the company took the line with the Scirocco and introduced a R version as its sport model. Both cars share the same styling cues as well as the same engine which is a 2.0 liter turbocharged developing 270hp and 350 nm of torque. Unlike the Golf though, the Scirocco is not an AWD vehicle and relies only to its front wheels to move it around!
