Mazda MX-5 GT Scored Podium At Donington

The Mazda MX-5 GT race car which is made to celebrate the car’s enormous success over the past 25 years through motorsport, is now second in class in the Britcar Production GTN Championship thanks a third place at the Donington race. Qualifying on Saturday saw the Mazda Financial Services and Motul backed Mazda MX-5 GT placed eighth in class on the grid.  The featherweight 850 kg Mazda beat Seat big names like Leon, Ginetta G50 and Lotus Elise for its podium glory. wen Mildenhall started the race and by the mid race handover he had climbed through the field to fifth in class. Mazda MX-5 doesn’t really need motorpsort pedigree in order to sell in millions, but it’s always cool for a car to have such background. So Mazda teamed up with Jota Racing to enter a very special version of the lightweight roadster dubbed GT to the Britcar MSA British Endurance Championship 2011. The racing version is even lighter than the production model which itself is famous for being incredibly light! The engineers have revised everything to make sure the car doesn’t weigh more than 850 kg. No word on layout, but we’d grudgingly expect a front-drive set-up when the purported MX-2 is unveiled as early as 2012.
